Karajan and Anif

Karajan, the maestro, and "his" village

Herbert von Karajan was one of the most famous and influential musicians of the 20th century and was doubtless the most famous citizen of Anif.

Hundreds of recordings with famous orchestras such as the Vienna or Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, singers such as Gundula Janowitz, Hildegard Behrens and soloists such as Anne Sophie Mutter were released by the perfectionist on the podium.

While the triple Grammy Award-winner internationalised the Salzburg Festival, his family settling in Anif brought a considerable amount of glamour to the small community close to Salzburg.
The conductor used to enjoy dining in the Friesacher restaurant with his family, who still live here. Sometimes in a very secluded manner and sometimes with equally famous colleagues. In his lifetime the road between the crossing in front of the Council Hall and his residence was named after him, his house was given the number 41 on Herbert-von-Karajan-Straße. After his death on 16 July 1989, the conductor was buried in the Anif cemetery.
