Salzkammergut
Excursions to the Salzkammergut
The Salzkammergut starts northeast of Salzburg and stretches further across the Federal States of Upper Austria and Styria.
The landscape is shaped by soft foothills of the Alps and numerous lakes.
This unique holiday region derives its name from the extraction of salt which was carried out in the Iron Age and created wealth in the region. In the Austrian monarchy the Salzkammergut, whose heart is formed by Bad Ischl, Hallstatt and Bad Aussee, was very popular. Its byname "royal Salzkammergut" was given to the region when the Emperor Kaiser Franz Josef and his wife Elisabeth, better known as Sisi, spent summers here year after year.
Apart from the noble and celebrities the landscape surrounding the Wolfgangsee, Attersee, Mondsee, Traunsee or Altausseer-See also attracted artists: The painter Gustav Klimt, the composers Franz Liszt and Gustav Mahler are only the most famous of people who were inspired by the tranquillity of nature.
