Kehlsteinhaus/Eagle's Nest
Kehlsteinhaus/Eagle's Nest – Hotel Friesacher
The Kehlsteinhaus is an excursion destination that is steeped in history. Experience the unique view over Berchtesgadener Land from this house on the Obersalzberg with its dark history.
A rewarding destination in Bavaria is the Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle’s Nest. The American Army named this striking building the Eagle’s Nest. The building has metre-thick walls on the Kehlstein on the Obersalzberg and is in one of the most impressive locations in the region. Originally built for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday, visitors are led through the rooms today.
The architect Martin Bormann conceived the Kehlsteinhaus after bold plans. It was meant to emphasise the power and influence of the National Socialist regime. The house was completed in record time and handed over to the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler on his 50th birthday, but he rarely came to this place. It is only by chance that the Kehlsteinhaus still stands today. The bombs of the Allies did not hit this bulky building despite massive attacks in the area around the Obersalzberg. The house on the Kehlstein also escaped a planned detonation. Thus the Eagle’s Nest still stands today on the summit of this mountain and was converted by the Bavarian government into a place in commemoration of the terror of Nazi rule.
You can reach the Kehlsteinhaus from the Hotel Friesacher with your own car or on guided tours that include a visit to the Eagle’s Nest. After arriving at the Kehlsteinhaus, you can either reach the summit by bus on the 13-kilometre road, or with the lift. You reach this from the car park through a 124-metre tunnel. This leads to a sumptuous, brass-lined lift that brings you up a further 124 metres in 41 seconds directly into the interior of the Kehlsteinhaus.
Experience a dark chapter in history at an overwhelming place in Berchtesgadener Land – visit the Eagle’s Nest on the Kehlstein. You will find here a non-binding query for your holiday at the Hotel Friesacher near Salzburg.
