Hohensalzburg Fort

The Fort – Salzburg’s landmark
The Hohensalzburg Fort, built in medieval times by archbishop Gebhart, towers above Salzburg’s baroque old city. The landmark of the Mozart city is today Europe’s biggest maintained medieval fort.Visiting the inner wards and fort museums is doubtless one of the best excursions of your Salzburg visit because not only the history of the castle is told but also an insight is given into the everyday life of knights, damsels and the masters of the Salzburg fort, the archbishops. The wonderful panorama across the Salzburg plain, the old city and the nearby peaks of the Alps is impressive. You can reach the fort, which incidentally was never taken by an enemy, on foot using various routes or using the fort cable car, which makes the ascent a lot easier.
